Hi. Here’s a monster set of 60’s garage rock 45s.  Seems like I am always listening to garage when winter rolls around.  I am particularly excited about my Gered and Dodique of The Gremlins 45, which was, until last week or so, completely unknown on the internet. Thanks to Garage Hangover for doing a feature write-up on the single that generated a little information…including the fact that it is from 1968 and from Billings, Montana.  Bye, Collin

Hello,

Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) died today and I’d like to revisit a mix of his I made a few years ago.

Captain Beefheart is very important to me, and I always try to push his music onto other people, so it was only a matter of time before I overwhelmed you with a whole mix of his music. I know it’s not for everyone, and I can respect that, but everyone should at least give it a chance because for me, personally, it affects like nothing else.

I bought the album Trout Mask Replica, by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, when I was a freshman in high school. It took years and years for this particular album to work its’ way into me but now, 11 years after I purchased it, I regard it as one of my favorite albums of all time. Captain Beefheart is one of those rare artists that seem to get better and better with each repeated listen. Once I really got the Captain, I really got the Captain. Does that make any sense? This mix here is career-spanning and has the representation of one track from each of the 13 officially released CB albums.

Howdy,

I’ve been trying to piece together an early reggae / rocksteady show for a few months now and with the help of a friend, Julie, I was able to pull off an hour or so.  I have unfortunately only scratched the surface with these tunes in this post but it’s a beginning, and hopefully I’ll get another set of this sorta music together in the coming (winter) months.

Setlist

There is some good news on the ink mathematics front. First off, the college radio station where I DJ, KBGA, has at last re-acquired a device with which one can record their radio programs…and I have been diligently doing that for the last three shows. Second off, I am rededicated to my radio show and I have begun to unearth all sorts of new records that I hope to post up here one day. Third off, the weather here has already started cooling considerably (I saw snowflakes today, september 5th) and that means I will once again retreat to music and this website in order to maintain my sanity over the winter months.  Now, for some music and some bullets:

  • Bob Dylan played here last week and I decided to wander down and sit outside the fence. I could hear the music alright but I can’t say Bob’s voice is anything but downright haggard. I sat there and drank a milkshake for a couple songs and then a teenage kid walked up to me and asked me what high school I was in. I told him I wasn’t, but I wish I was.  I biked on home.
  • Saw a bear the other day while mountain biking in the Rattlesnake. So nice to see a bear…I’ve missed every one of them so far this year.
  • Also, I heard what was probably a mountain lion scream the other night. This is the second time I’ve heard that terrifying scream.
  • Spent a little too much time watching this Psychic TV video down below. Not only is the song and video all out sweet, but the lyrics are about Brian Jones, once a member of The Rolling Stones who died a mysterious death.

Hello again,

A lot has been going on over the last month or so but I’ve managed to get this one nice early 70’s African & Brazilian funk-psych mix together for ya. There are some really nice cookers in this mix that have been destroying me daily for the last couple months…I simply can’t stop cranking them on high-fi the second I get in the door after work..Music like this really makes me wish I could seriously dance. Oh, and there are some early James Brown tunes in here as well.

I  hit a pedestrian bulb-out a few weeks ago on my bicycle while biking at night. It was a bad wreck, one of the worst I’ve been in for sure, but somehow I walked away with only emotional scarring and a beat-up bike and helmet. I know these bulb-outs probably won’t disappear anytime soon but I decided to write a letter to the newspaper and they published it, so maybe city official folks will start rethinking these things before they put more in. This Missoula woman wasn’t as lucky as I was.

I’m heading outta town for a bit so I’ll see you in August.

Have a nice one, Collin

Hello,

The last few weeks in Missoula have seen a whole lot of rain and last wednesday, during my radio show,  was no exception. With that big window in the studio allowing the grey dark skies to look in at me I put together a sort of slower, folk-influenced set that seemed to fit the mood just about right. Here’s that.

Thanks for stopping in,

Collin

Townes Van Zandt “Rex’s Blues” from Live At the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas

Hi.

Seems like all I’ve wanted to listen to for the last few weeks is lo-fi garage rock, the more mood the better. This mix starts out with some of the cream of the crop for me. A lot of truly haunting songs from bands that have almost completely faded into obscurity, many of them only releasing a few 45’s in their day anyway.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to the song “My Girl” by The Vandals over the last week. After the spooky garage rock tunes we head into a short set of psych songs featuring The Autoharp, an incredible instrument with a beautifully eerie quality that was used by a number of psych-folk bands in the 60’s. Lastly, we round it out with a couple of folk tunes, including one by the Legendary Missoula artist JR Rummel. (thanks to VVR for the Mp3!). Hope you are well, collin
